The Effects of Various Potassium Ion-Containing solutions on Intradental A -Fiber Activity

Abstract
Intradental nerve activity (INA) was recorded from single functional pulp nerve unit dissected from the inferior alveolar nerve in cats. In order to study the effects of various agents on AS-fiber activity evoked by 4M NaCl, test solutions such as IM KCl, IM KHCO3 , 1M K2 C204, 1M KNO3, saline and 1M NaCl, were applied to deep dentinal cavity.
1. 9 intradental AS-fiber units identified with electrical stimulation responded 4M NaCl solution applied deep dentinal cavity. Mean conduction velocity and electrical threshold were 12.7 ¡¾ 6.1 m/sec, 0.8 ¡¾ 0.6V.
2. Application of 4M NaCl easily evoked an irregular burst of action potentials after a latency (a few seconds) and continued until the NaCl was washed away.
3. Application of 1M KCl, IM KHCO3, 1M K2 C2 04 and 1M KNO3 for 5 min. caused a repititive firing with gradually decreasing frequency and remarkably reduced the AS-fiber activity evoked by the 4M NaCl to 18.2 %, 33.2 %, 14.8 % and 6.1 % compared with control period.
4. Saline and 1M NaCl were failed to reduce the AS-fiber activity.
